World Engineering Day Celebration

On Sunday, March 4, 2024, the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), a division of the The Nigerian Society of Engineers Headquarters, commemorated World Engineering Day with an online seminar themed “Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World.”

World Engineering Day, established by the WFEO – World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), aims to recognize engineers’ pivotal role in shaping our world as well as their contributions to sustainable development.

The online seminar was very successful, with past national chairmen of the NISafetyE, Engr Biodun Oyedepo and Engr Azuka Emeasoba [ABEY], in attendance. Other national executive members present included Deputy National Chairman, Engr Andrew Abanum, IDipNEBOSH, PhD, National Vice Chairmen, Engrs Francis Etafo and Chidozie Okereke, FNSE, FNISafetyE, National Gen Sec, Engr Engr. Owoedimo Enang MNSE, FNISafetyE, National Treasurer and Engr Engr. Dr. Omolola Adetona.

The speakers delivered outstanding presentations. Engr (Dr) Rex K. C. Amadi, a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, reminded us how safety is modelled mathematically using the formulas

He showed clearly that, for engineers, safety is not based on opinions of what feels safe but is intentional and quantifiable.

The safety factor serves as a predictive measure, determining the threshold before failure. Its applications span across design, operations, and maintenance, influencing decisions regarding load capacities, operational cycles, and stress thresholds.

Engr Prof Gerald Okeke, MNSE, FNISafetyE, a distinguished Fellow of the Institution and safety professor, presented an insightful paper on the correlation between the heat many of us complain about in the afternoons and global climate change. He shared ongoing research he is engaged on about the impact of greenhouse gases and emissions in Nigeria as well as precautionary measures that should be taken to mitigate heat-related risks. Notably, his research explores exciting approaches to combating climate change such as utilizing trees and domestic plants for cooling and carbon sequestration, offering promising solutions to climate change challenges in Nigeria.

The Technical Secretary, Engr Enoch Oyokunyi, and his team, including Engr Engr. Isaac A. Aikoroje, facilitated the event seamlessly. State chpater Chairmen such as Engrs Osolima Mac-Jaja MNISafetyE of Lagos and Uloaku Okeke of Rivers, as well as distinguished Fellows such as Engr.Dr. Akaninyene Joshua FNSE, FNIEEE, FNiSafetyE, Engr Mary Umoh MNSE , R. ENGR, Engr. Mercy Ntuk MNSE, FNISafetyE,MNSChE,MISPON and Engr Emmanuel Ekong, also graced the occasion.

Certificates were issued to presenters and participants to confirm their attendance, and it was gratifying to see they included members from across Nigeria. The Institution expresses gratitude to MOBIL PRODUCING NIGERIA UNLIMITED for sponsoring the platform used in hosting the workshop.

Looking ahead, the Institution eagerly anticipates more impactful technical sessions as part of its strategic plan, #IGNITE2028.
