Enough is enough! NISafetyE Convenes National Workshop to Address Surge in Petroleum Tanker Explosions In response to a series of devastating petroleum tanker explosions across Nigeria, the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE) will host a critical two-day national workshop titled “The Problem of Petroleum Tanker Explosions in Nigeria – The Issues, The Challenges, and The Solutions” on May 27–28, 2025, at the NSE National Headquarters, Abuja.
#National #Emergency Recent incidents underscore the urgency of this crisis: · Majiya, Jigawa

State (October 15, 2024): A fuel tanker overturned, leading to an explosion that claimed 209 lives and injured 124 others, marking one of the deadliest such incidents in Nigeria's history. · Suleja, Niger State (January 18, 2025): A gasoline tanker crash resulted in 98 fatalities and approximately 70 injuries, with victims including individuals attempting to collect spilled fuel. · Agaie, Niger State (September 8, 2024): A collision between a fuel tanker and a truck led to an explosion that killed 52 people and 50 cattle. These and many more tragedies highlight systemic issues such as deteriorating infrastructure, inadequate regulatory enforcement, and insufficient emergency response mechanisms. The workshop aims to: - Develop actionable policy recommendations for legislative reforms to enhance tanker safety. - Strengthen regulatory frameworks governing petroleum transportation and storage. - Establish a multi-agency Petroleum Products Safety Committee to oversee the implementation of safety measures. - Formulate a unified action plan to significantly reduce tanker-related incidents nationwide. The event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including: Government Agencies such as the
Federal Road Safety Corps CDS,
Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and members of the National Assembly. Industry Representatives such as
Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG). Safety Professionals, Divisions of
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), emergency responders, and public safety advocates. “These tanker explosions are not mere accidents; they are preventable disasters resulting from systemic failures,” stated Engr.
Seun Faluyi, FNSE, FNISafetyE, National Chairman of NISafetyE. “This workshop is a call to action to implement engineering solutions, enforce regulations, and prioritize public safety.” Media Contact
